Verdict: 9/10
Writer: Jon Favreau
Director: Jon Favreau
Movie lead: Jon
Favreau
Supporting
Cast: Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin
Hoffman, Oliver Platt, Robert Downey Jr. & Bobby Cannavale
Let me begin this review by saying that it’s a brilliant script which has successfully managed to bring out the heart & passion of the writer into the movie. A simple story of a chef who loves to cook creative food, feed his customers and how he achieves his creative freedom & fame; has been crafted delicately to fit the neatness of the screenplay. The screenplay that's directed with a clear vision takes you from one complete scene of a continuous script and a building momentum to the next, until it’s over. Simplicity in movies is the new buzz word.
The way Jon Favreau
has cut the frills & fancies that could have totally ruined the rawness of
his script is by way of probably having a classy taste and a natural swagger
which is coolly portrayed in the movie. #Chef’s got a natural attitude; those
which have one will totally get me here. (Watch out for Robert Downey Jr., he
plays the smallest part in the film but leaves a lasting impression on you.)
Chef Carl Casper (Jon
Favreau) works as the head of chef at an old & rusty owner's restaurant. That rusted old man who’s happy serving his customers the same menu night after night, year after
year is none other than Dustin Hoffman. The superstar has flawlessly played the nagging old stuck up owner.
After years of hard
work, Carl gets an opportunity to get his authentic cooking skills reviewed by
a celebrity food critic Michel Ramsay (Olivier Platt) at the restaurant. Carl’s
all pepped up & excited to serve his exceptionally creative menu to the
critic in the evening when Dustin bursts his bubble. He forces Carl to stick to
the same old menu of last 20 years & top it off with
his specialty ‘Chocolate lava "so passe" cake'! When he disputes, he’s harshly reminded
that he only works for the restaurant; doesn't own it. His
creativity depends on the owner's business decisions which consider the money
rolling in the form of a house full with customers each night more than a food
critic’s review.
Carl’s forced to take
his boss’s orders. He serves Ramsay the usual. He doesn't know then
the consequences until he reads the review online with his friends. Ramsay
rips him off on Twitter, a social networking site for the elite.
Scarlett Johannson
does an amazing job of Carl’s friend with benefits & of course, she carries
herself as the sexiest waitress on earth. That’s
the specialty of this movie.
Each actor completely
fits & compliments his/her role. Guys you just have to check
out how hot she looks with a simple black leather jacket and a dash of red
lipstick! I am telling you: rawness & simplicity are key words to describe the film.
This is where the
plot thickens:-Carl’s son & their sensitive relationship comes into
play. This movie is a revelation of how parents today are so career driven that
they more often than not just cannot spend quality time with their children.
The way they've weaved the build up of the father-son bonding is
something every busy father should watch & learn from.
Carl takes it upon
himself to show Ramsay that he cannot rip him off just like that with his
stupid review. He picks a #Twitter fight with him making a complete hysterical fool of himself, ruining his reputation earned after years of hard work! (This
part’s real funny btw)
Frustrated with no
job & overcome with guilt he cannot take care of his son, his ex-wife-
Sofia, hotness personified, Vergara comes into the picture. Socialite Sofia decides to help
him out in her own classy little way.
The dysfunctional
family goes to Miami & that’s where Sofia makes you fall in love with her
beauty that flows through the role she plays with all her heart so perfectly.
She is phenomenally just Sofia Vergara. She sets Carl up on an idea of a food
truck that would help unleash his creative energies in cooking food. She sets
him up with Robert Downey Jr.Sofia Vergara with that #vergaric accent steals the show in her own way.
Robert’s so hot he
can’t help but bring his royal attitude to the film. He’s there to help Carl
with a food truck at Sofia’s request. Check this scene out; if you like ‘bite
me, sauve’ kind of humor then this scene’s your guru! It
also makes many realize that attitude’s a gift from god to only few lucky
ones.
Direction of the
movie shifts from high octane intensity to power packed fun times with Carl cleaning up the truck with
his son, bringing it on the road with his friend chef John Leguizamo. Together
the three men roll the show and how! They bang the truck on a road trip across
US! While Carl & John are busy preparing food, his son takes up the role of
his marketing manager by publicizing them on twitter using exclusive digital
gimmicks like short picture of happy moments & other exclusive marketing
tools!
The movie has exposed
the latest culture of entrepreneurship with use of social media opening many
ideas & avenues for creative minds who refuse to back down.
· This movie
teaches you so much. A simple movie with three simple lessons:
- If
you’re creative success comes to you no matter what the roadblocks you may
face
- Being
busy with career is one thing, ignoring your kid’s need for attention is
absolutely abominable unless you want them to turn out loveless
- The most important being – Don’t give anyone else the power to decide how good you are at your chosen profession. Sure, respect feedback but always trust your instinct & go grab that success!
Jon Favreau has
proved with this film what one man can do alone & achieve that neatness you
cannot do with many cooks spoiling the broth. Never share a vision for it may
be polluted by the time of its delivery.
