Sonu
Nigam drew flak for tweeting against Islamic laws of praying the azaan in the
morning. Unfortunately the insensitive singer did not realize he was
questioning the faith of an entire religion.
This
twitter act by Sonu Nigam was completely unexpected of the singer. Was it to
gain some attention from the media?
Sonu
Nigam said, “I am not a Muslim and I have to be woken up to the sound of the azaan.
When will this forced religiousness end in India.”
My question
to the singer is, “What would he have tweeted about if it were early morning,
loud music classes instead of the azaan? Would his reaction be to stop those
classes?”
Religion
is faith never forced. An ancient practice of calling in God’s name, to the
devotees, to pray in the morning seems to be a discomfort for him. But isn’t
tolerance the golden rule of democracy?
How
could a singer of his stature be so politically incorrect? What example is he
setting for his fans and followers by making tasteless remarks like these?
As a
public figure, Sonu had responsibilities towards his listeners. With what’s out
one can only imagine the kind of influence he has had on light minded brains
that would agree to whatever he says, especially fanatics. Doesn’t he realize his one statement can cause
riots in this country?
It’s a
good thing that only the Bollywood industry is divided on this issue in
opinion. What if the nation was divided by such a severe comment? I’m afraid to
think of the digression in its truest form.
Be tolerant,
Jumana
